Peter Orszag has been out of the public eye for the last couple of months, having settled into his new role as a senior advisor at Citi Bank—a less visible post than his last one, as a member of the Obama Administration—but his name has been coming up again recently as he was announced as one of the contributors to the Bloomberg View, the latest editorial endeavor from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Peter Orszag has enjoyed a varied career up to this point, and that experience will surely shape his role at the Bloomberg enterprise. Born in Lexington, Massachusetts, Orszag is a graduate of Princeton University and also of the London School of Economics. He has served in advisory roles to multiple presidential administrations, and has also been a common name on the op-ed page of The New York Times.
Peter Orszag served in advisory roles to Presidents Clinton and Bush, and during the latter administration he also served as the head of the Congressional Budget Office. He was tapped by President Obama to serve as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget—making him the youngest member of the Obama Administration. He served in this capacity until July of 2010; more recently, he has led a think-tank of senior bankers at Citi Bank.
Peter Orszag has long spoken in no uncertain terms about certain important economic issues—among them healthcare reform and Social Security reform—which makes his fit at the Bloomberg View seem a natural one. Indeed, Orszag played a large role in shaping President Obama’s healthcare reform bill, and has written about this and other issues in books and on the op-ed page of The New York Times.
Peter Orszag is one of several writers tapped to contribute to the Bloomberg View. The outfit will include views and opinions on a variety of issues facing America—and, given the involvement of Peter Orszag, one assumes this will include many economic issues. While the contributors will be many, however, the voice of the Bloomberg View will ultimately be that of Michael Bloomberg himself; all of the editorials will ultimately reflect his own perspective. Issues to be covered range from healthcare reform to education, and any number of other topics Bloomberg believes to be urgent to today’s America; Peter Orszag will be joined by writers from various fields, including a few fellow presidential advisors from various past administrations.
